Like a fish herself, a lithe, silvery body emerged from the soft underbrush. It slinked liquidly to the river and crouched low, coiling her muscles, and leapt out onto the first stone with the ease that any Riverclanner has around water. It is what gives the Riverclanners their confidence, for what is a Riverclanner without her swimming? A large Windclan cat, or a sleek Thunderclanner?

The cat crouched low, staring into the water with a concentrated gaze. Her long, lean legs were bent under her skinny chest, sticking her bony haunches above her body. Her long, striped tail, curled around her torso due to the confinedness of the rock, Twitched absently. Her slate-gray eyes were blue in the reflected light of the ripples, edged with sunlight that shone blindingly bright today. There was silence on the Stepping-Stones, punctured only by the trills of a starling and the water kissing the banks.

Nettlevoice crouched lower, her gray nose nearly touching the water, watching the slivers of silver fish flit back and forth with aimless hurry. And then, like lightening, her paw flashed forward and cut through the water, bringing a fish floundering on the rock before her. Nettlevoice, snapping back to life, stretched her head forward and snapped into the neck of the fish, who ceased to move. The she-cat snapped up the fish in her mouth and leaped back to the banks of the river, her task accomplished.

Nettlevoice set the fish down and looked up, down, and up the banks again. There was nothing but clumps of stiff rushes and grassy sand beaten by the strong sun. The only scent was the scent of a water vole in the nearby bush, but Nettlevoice had her catch. Well, there was no sign of another cat.

"Might as well reward myself..." She murmured in her unnatural hoarse, raspy voice. And she dug into the fish's flesh, letting scales fall away like silver raindrops. Yes, Nettlevoice often broke certain rules of the Warrior Code without regret. That was her way, even if she was loyal and fought for her clan. But she was not as loyal to her clanmates, so she thought that wasting a perfectly good fish on some prissy she-cat was mousebrained.

Nettlevoice did not get along well with other she-cats. They were too vain and self-centered, she scoffed to herself. Now tomcats... they was her entertainment, even if they were not her friend. She learned how to flirt at a young apprentice age, and most toms forgot about her awful voice if she made her moves on them. She laughed to herself... she could hunt, fight, and flirt. Yes, she was talented.

Crossedsight did not enjoy the company of Nettlevoice. Cruel it was, too think of her as a freak for her strange, rasping voice when he himself was made fun of. But, she was the only one around at the moment, and the tom had just caught her breaking the warrior code. Scowling, he hunched his shoulders and padded out of the brambles, stopping a few tail-lengths away from her and staring into the river.

You know, he just realized how complicated the lives of fish were. Crossedsight never realized what he thought were just swimming prey, made only for the purpose of himself and other cats, were really not too different from himself and his clan. His eyes locked on a small, pink fish surrounded by larger ones. A kit, a kit of fish! How delightful!

He smiled and looked around, before remembering his unpleasant company. Crossedsight cringed as her greedy gobbling noises filled the quiet air. He longed to say something, to scold her, but he knew she would snap back, like an old badger. In fact, Nettlevoice did remind Crossedsight of a badger. He snickered, imagining the grumpy she-cat loping around the forest, tossing rotting leaves over with her pointy snout.

He snickered, blinking his eyes once to regain focus. Straightening his back, he remembered the resaon why he was here; to scold. "So, Nettlevoice, enjoying that fish? I assumed you carried it all the way here from the fresh-kill pile, for a sweet warrioress like you would never disobey the Code." he forved 'sweet' out with much difficulty.

Fourtunately for him, Nettlevoice did not hide that she was flirtatious, and quite honestly, tom-addicted. A she-cat who did not enjoy the company of toms; well, she would have right then and there murdered him.

Nettlevoice's head flicked upward as another cat came - none too quietly - to the river. Instinctively her tail shot out and pushed the remains into the river. Oh well, it was done anyway. It was only then that she realized the tom who had approached the river, emanating disgust her way. Crossedsight, the little freak. That tom annoyed her, with his goody-good look on life and the way he kissed up to the leader and deputy. She snorted as he sat there staring into the river - not a hunter's crouch, just sitting there. She wondered if he could see the fish with those laughable eyes. No, she didn't bother flirting with Crossedsight. He wasn't worth it.

And ooh, when he turned and started... scolding? her, her fur raised in a solid line down her visible backbone, and her lips curled into a snarl. She raised to her paws and stalked to where he stood so smugly and was nearly in his face. "I'm surprised, Crossedsight, that you are disobeying your own Code. Aren't all warriors supposed to be kissing up to Hawkstar right about now? Or is it 'try to watch fish' time?" She hissed in her usual raspy voice.

And then Nettlevoice turned swiftly away, letting her tail whip in his face, and padded soem fox-lengths down the river to crouch next to the river and look for a slow fish. But she couldn't concentrate on catching a fish. teh nerve of that... that mouse-brained, smug-nosed, bug-eyed rat. What Nettlevoice didn't admit was that she got so fired up because of anxiety. She could get in trouble for eating prey, and although she was a bit of a loose cannon, she didn't want to be punished. Her claws kniving intot he soft mud, she breathed slowly and tried to calm down. That little twit.

Crossedsight narrowed his eyes angrily, upset at her crackling voice whipping at him. "No, Nettlevoice, kissing up to Hawkstar is much different than respecting him and the warrior code, which is what I do, and wht you are expected to do." he spat, fur bristling. HOw she made him cringe with disgust. but no, she had to go one step further and comment on him watching the fish.

"I prefer to watch the fish rather than disobeying the code." he growled, unsheathing his claws in the dirt in frusturation. His tail flicked angrily behind him as the warrioress stared back at him in equal anger. As she turned around, he let out his breath, glad to have that over with.

But no, the angering badgertail took it again furhter, snapping the last lock of sensibilty in his mind. He growled and dropped skillfully into a hunting crouch, hissing and stalking her before leaping up and cuffing her ear, claws hoping to catch on something.

This was not a fight, just a mere exalting of rights. He skidded to a halt in front of her, tail lashing. "Wanna play with me, kitty-kat? You've chosen the wrong day to tussle." he hissed, his ears back, simulating the rush of a real battle. Adrenaline pumped through his veins as he sheathed and unsheathed his claws into the pebbles, paws straining from keeping the crouch.

Nettlevoice snorted as she stared at the water. "The warrior code, the warrior code," She meowed, watching a plump fish dart back and forth. She still didn't both to look up. "They must've brainwashed you or something. Tell me, in a real battle..." She continued, and then paused. Her muscles twitched and her claws scraped at the mud. Her ears turned forward, listening with acute hearing, and then SPLASH! A fish was left floundering in the mud, reflecting the sunlight off its slimy scales. "...Would you let yourself die?"

Nettlevoice snapped the neck of the fish and looked up at the sound of pawsteps. Suddenly Crossedsight was in her face yelling at her. She leaped to her feet, disgusted with him. "Oh, we're trying to act tough now, are we?" She hissed, staring right back into his crossed eyes. "Go ahead. Try." Nettlevoice saw the bluff behind the threat and was not worried. Crossedsight knew the Code by heart - he would never strike a clanmate. In a flash her paw swiped forward through the air, as if to slash his comical face. It pulled away at the last second, however - just an action to egg him on.

Nettlevoice was a flirt - she provoked the charming side in toms. But she could provoke other things too - the not-so-nice side.

Crossedsight snarled, looking absolutely ridiculous. In fact, this whole scuffle was quite a freak show; Crossedsight with his strange eyes and Nettlevoice with her rough throat. If I hadn't been roleplay and was a cat watching on the nearby banks, I myself would have been in hysterics by now. Yes, where were we? Aha, that's right, the arguement.

Crossedsight lifted his lip, revealing healthy pink gums and a few yellowing teeth. He lunged, his reactions acting and body curving as to just miss her throat. Smiling, he wrinkled his nose. "Shall I continue? I'm afraid I was a little close that time. Besides, Hawkstar would be glad if I provoked you to leave, you little freak." he hissed, enjoying how smooth his voice sounded compared to hers. Perhaps if he striked her right, he could set and end to that dreadful rasping of hers.

Nettlevoice glanced up to see Crossedsight lunging at her. A hiss escaped her throat and she leapt to the side, dangerously close to the river. She snarled at Crossedsight, her silvery striped fur on end now, her teeth bared. But she wouldn't lunge - she was better an dmore mature than Crossedsight. She wouldn't go around everyone that insulted her.

And then that mouse-brained comment about the leader not wanted her there... that was just... just... "I think Hawkstar was almost as idiotic as you, Freaksight, to not get rid of you as a kit. What kind of warrior are you if you can't even see your opponent!"

Nettlevoice knew first-hand what it was like when someone really picked on your worst flaw. She had survived moons and moons of that. In a very clear way Crossedsight and Nettlevoice were the same - they both had obvious and hard-not-to-notice freakish qualities. Yes, they were freaks.

But obviously she was a better freak.

Crossedsight hissed and felt his heart lurch as she poked fun at him. Most people hardly mentioned it- probably unlike her, he was never teased or anything. And he could see perfectly fine. "I don't have to go around acting like some crooked badgertailed-foxdung!" he swore, throwing together the best two insults he could think of, annoyed to a point of no return. He whipped his tail and made an attempt to push her into the river. It was feeble, for he was growing tired of this stupid cat. He was more adnavced than her, and he would be accepted in StarClan. Her carcass would just rot and detoriate, food for the little kits.

Crossedsight sneered at the thought. Perhaps he should scratch her eyes out, and then she wouldn't be so careless as to comment on the sesitive area of vision.

Nettlevoice whipped around and snorted. "Oh no. I'm hurt," She meowed sarcastically, her ears flat against her head. "Get a life."

Nettlevoice turned to stalk away and found Crossedsight lurching against her, pushing her paws out from under her. Normally it would be an easily evaded pounce, but Nettlevoice wasn't ready for it. She was oooh so angry at that mousebrain Crossedsight, and was hurting a bit too. She was used to being stared at by ignorant cats when she spoke - she scared little kits and was laughed at by apprentices. But Nettle was used to that, and steeled herself against it. But Crossedsight must've known what it was like to be stared at - that just made his insults, stupid as they were, hurt worse.

And so Nettlevoice wasn't prepared when Crossedsight pushed her. Her paws scrabbled against the rocky bank of the river, and she found herself flipping as her back legs and her body all the way up to her shoulders plunge into the cold water. She hissed, piercing through the mud with her front claws, straining all of her muscle, lifting her body back out of the water. Finally she was completely free of the water, although three fourths of her body was cold and soaking wet. Her mouth was bared in a snarl, and her eyes were cold hard as she glared at Crossedsight.

"You can go rot, you freak," She snarled. "Because I'm not wasting any more time around you." And she stalked off into the brush, fuming.
